What is a UPC or EAN code?

A Universal Product Code (UPC) is a 12 digit barcode that enables retailer to track product sales and inventory. A UPC code is required on all products sold in Canada and the US. A European Article Number (EAN) is a 13 digit code that functions in the same way as a UPC, but can be used in all countries.

How do I get the UPC codes I purchased?

Immediately after your payment is processed, you’ll receive an email with all your codes. Attached to the email will be a .zip file containing an Excel spreadsheet with all of your codes and the images in PNG and EPS formats. If you want to use these codes on Amazon, simply copy and paste the information and Amazon will automatically generate product labels for you.

Where can I use my UPC codes?

Your UPC codes will work in any store, online or off. We should note that WalMart, Sam’s Club, Kroger, FredMeyer, Macy’s and Bloomingdales will require you to purchase a company prefix from GS1-US in order to sell in their retail outlets. This may not be necessary to sell online through these stores, but is still recommended.

Our codes used to work on Amazon. But Amazon updated their company policies recently and they have started a barcode ownership verification process. Currently, Amazon is using GS1’s GEPIR database for verification. We have contacted Amazon to let them know that the database they are using is not current and does not reflect correct ownership information for all of the barcode numbers GS1 has listed, but as per an email from them, they have no plans to change their process. Therefore, you have no choice but to obtain barcodes from GS1 if you want to list your products on Amazon currently.

After I buy a UPC/barcode, how quickly will I receive it?

Immediately after payment. As soon as your payment information has been received, you’ll get an email with all of the UPC codes purchased. Attached to the email will be an Excel file containing all of the UPC and EAN codes purchased, as well as images in PNG and EPS formats.

What will I get with my order?

You’ll receive an email with a .zip attachment containing an Excel file with all of the barcode information and image files of all barcodes. No need to generate barcodes as you go, simply copy and paste from the files you receive.

Do my codes need to be registered?

No, simply provide them to your distributor or retailer when asked.

Will I receive a legitimate code?

Yes. EAN-UPC-CODES provides codes that are guaranteed to be unique, valid, and never before issued or used.

What exactly am I purchasing when I buy from you?

When you purchase a code from us, you receive the rights to the specific codes provided to you. However, this does not include the company prefix. If you are selling through an outlet that requires a unique company prefix, you will need to obtain one through GS1-US. If you are unsure, you should review the vendor agreement for your retailer. Most online outlets, including eBay, and iTunes, do not require a company prefix.

Do I need a UPC for online sales?

Only if your retailer requires it.

Do my codes expire?

Never. All codes you purchase are yours forever.

Will my codes work in other countries?

Your codes will work in any country that uses UPC or EAN codes, and most countries in the world do.

Is my code unique?

Absolutely! Codes purchased from us originate from GS1-US and are guaranteed to have never been issued. No one other than you can use your codes.

How many codes do I need?

Every product you sell needs a unique barcode. If you sell a product in three sizes, each size will need a separate code. If you sell a product in three sizes and four colors you will need 3 x 4 = 12 codes.

Can I use a UPC to sell magazines?

In most cases, magazines need a special barcode with encoded 5 digit BIPAD numbers, though some retailers will accept magazines with just UPC or EAN codes. Check with your retailer for their requirements. We do not currently offer BIPAD numbers, but if your retailer does not require them, you can buy UPC codes from us for your magazine.

I wrote a book I’d like to sell, what kind of code do I need?

Many retail outlets will require your book to have an ISBN, which is a 13 digit number used to identify the title and publisher. You may want to check the requirements for the store(s) you want to sell through. In some cases, a UPC code is sufficient, and you can obtain one from us. Unfortunately, we do not currently offer ISBN’s. Please visit www.isbn.org for more infos on obtaining ISBN codes.

Will your UPC codes work to sell CDs in a retail outlet?

Yes, our UPC codes work fine for selling CDs in any retail outlet. Our UPC codes also allow independent artists to register music with SoundScan to track sales and improve marketing.
